The spokeshave is a tool that goes back to Roman times. Wheelwrights used them to form the spokes of wagon and chariot wheels. Marine craftsmen still use them to shape oars, sweeps and small spars. It is one of the handiest tools in the ship carpenter's chest. Here is one cast in bronze. It is 10 inches long with a 2 1/3 inch bade. Cast into the grip is "H. Masters." This is another tool from the famous shipbuilding city of Bath, Maine. (300-50911)
