It is entirely hand-forged and has a very slight pall which I believe would indicate it to be of mid 18th century vintage.

This style of side ax is sometimes called a "raven's wing." It was popular in the 16th to 19th centuries and is a direct descendant of the Viking war ax. It is meant to be used in the right hand as the blade is slightly offset to avoid scraping the knuckles when trimming a timber or spar from the side.

This one if of unknown age and origin though it was found in Maine. It is entirely hand-forged and has a very slight pall which I believe would indicate it to be of mid 18th century vintage. It could go back to work tomorrow but should probably see an honorable retirement as the centerpiece of a collection. It has a beautiful sculptural quality.
