Modern mariners are probably familiar with the Freiberger Trommel sextant. It is a well-balanced, lightweight instrument that incorporates some interesting innovations in sextant design.

The micrometer drum is entirely enclosed, protecting it from dirt and corrosion. The rack is machined directly into the bow of the arc. The frame is made of an aluminum alloy that is light and very strong. The index arm is enclosed and protected by the instrument's frame.

This particular sextant was made at the Freiberger factory in Saxony during the 1960's. The company had been making precision instruments for 200 years and had rebuilt their business from the destruction of World War II.

This sextant is in good order and has a custom-made, American walnut case. It has large, modern optics, handy in night observations, and comes with a 4 x 40 scope.

The calibration certificate has gone missing. But you may make your own or take it to a nautical shop with the precision equipment to do an analysis.

A good buy for a fine, modern sextant.
