A large, full-cage anchor light is hard to find. We know, because we're always looking for them. This example, a full 18 inches tall, is one of our favorites.

A large, full-cage anchor light is hard to find. We know, because we're always looking for them. This example, a full 18 inches tall, is one of our favorites.

Usually made of brass, these lights were hand-made and expensive in their day. They were generally used on board ocean-going sailing vessels in the mid to late 1800s. The cage feature was meant to protect sails and rigging from the hot, ball-type chimney vent on the top of the light case.

Here is a sea-going veteran of this style. It has seen a lot of service. It has a heavy, Fresnel lens with no chips or cracks. The spun brass case has the usual small dents and cracks that can be expected in a light of this advanced age.

The font and burner appear to be in good order. I have added a new wick.

This light is of American manufacturer, probably in New York around around the time of the Civil War. I believe the burner was changed at a later date.

I've done my best to shows its imperfections, but I assure you it is solid and functional.
