The serving mallet and serving board are used by ship riggers to worm, parcel and serve the standing rigging on traditional ships. This involves tightly wrapping the shrouds and some stays with tarred house line to protect the cordage or wire rope.
This serving board was made by Mr. Beattie in Maine many years ago though it has not seen much use. It is entirely hand-made. Riggers always made their own. It is about 12 inches long and ready for work.
